Signs your old grout has failed, trapping water under your tiles

Signs your old grout has failed, trapping water under your tiles

Most of the time, the leak begins in your shower, where your old cement grout has likely failed. Once the water’s in, it doesn’t drain; it just spreads throughout your bathroom, trapped between the tiles and the waterproof membrane. You only have a short window where bathroom tile regrouting can fix this. Leave it too long, and you’re up for a full bathroom rebuild, which could cost $30k or more.

Water damage

Soft, swollen, or warped timber near the bathroom floor.

Deteriorating grout

Grout that’s cracking, crumbling, or flaking off by touch.

Moisture issues

Damp-looking spots, bubbling paint, or mould patches on nearby walls.

Persistant leaks

Mystery leaks that your plumber can’t seem to find.

Build-up

Crusty white build-up appearing on your grout lines.

Shifting tiles

Bathroom tiles that shift, wobble, or lift at the edges.

Cement grout is porous; it isn’t waterproof. Epoxy is. Most people don’t realise how big the difference is… until they’ve paid for both.

A rushed cement grout job

(AKA basic balcony leak “repair”)

A quality epoxy job

(AKA how we do it at Save & Seal)

Skim a few mm off the top of the old grout

Cut out all the grout, down to the depth of the tile

“Re-seal” with just a surface layer of grout, leaving water trapped underneath

Use a wet vac to remove trapped moisture before full-depth regrouting

Use cement-based grout (not waterproof)

Use a two-part epoxy resin (100% waterproof)

Apply sealer from a spray can that can wash off within 30 days

No sealer needed – epoxy seals it fully from within

Looks good at first – but you’ll probably be redoing it in 12 months

Done right once, with a genuinely waterproof solution and zero shortcuts

You’re not alone. Most bathroom grout repairs cut corners and leave you with the same problem a year down the track. That’s not how we roll.

The industry standard

The Save & Seal standard

Hard to get a proper response – then they rush the quote and confuse you with jargon

Friendly follow-up, plain-English quoting, and booked within 48 hours

Might “fix it” even if they know it’s beyond repair

Will tell you when regrouting isn’t the right fix

Often a franchise that hires subcontractors paid per job – incentivising rushed work

A family business with an in-house team that takes the time to do it properly

Might leave your place looking like a worksite

Treat your home like their own

No real aftercare – once it’s done, they’re gone

Back to you within the day to fix any issues

Give a 10-year warranty but make it easy to void (e.g. by only allowing specific cleaning products)

Actually deliver a 10+ year waterproof result, backed by a 10-year warranty that’s realistic
